There are a lot of Bimmers out there that have undergone some power upgrading at the hands of various aftermarket specialists, or even their owner.
And since owning a BMW is quite important to owners, they try not to dilute the pedigree too much.
Then again, we have this owner of a very nice E39 BMW M5. As many other owners, he wanted more from his car, but his approach borders on blasphemy if you ask some BMW enthusiasts. Instead of going for a supercharger or maybe just a new ECU retune, he decided to change the engine altogether.
The real issue is what he replaced it with, namely a 2JZ engine from a Toyota Supra. So this E39 BMW M5 lost the very heart of the machine, and despite the impressive 500 Hp output, this BMW is now effectively ruined. Reasoning that the 2JZ engine will help keep maintenance costs down, the owner wanted the best of both worlds, and while he might have achieved it (sort of) he will have a hard time selling the hybrid should he ever decide to.
