Nothing disturbing has been done to the exterior look of the car, or the interior for that matter, yet I’m getting completely mixed feelings about this car.

Only one thing is responsible for this, and it’s not the new set of alloys that aren’t the first option to go to for a classic bimmer.

This car comes to us from the United States of America, namely from Columbus, Georgia, which is a bit of a hint as to what’s going on.

The original car was a 1987 BMW 325e sedan, which means it was powered by a creamy 2.7 liter straight six cylinder, naturally aspirated engine.

E30 BMW 3 Series with engine swap

While old, it’s still an interesting powerplant. Except in this case, it was thrown out and replaced by a considerably larger engine.

It is actually a 302 cubic inch Ford engine. That’s a nearly twice as large 5.0 liter V8 unit which was sourced from a 1997 Mercury Mounaineer.

That shouldn’t be the first choice. Or the second. Or the third one, so why go for it? Simply put? Because of the budget.

E30 BMW 3 Series with engine swap

When you fit an old car, with an engine that’s not quite so old yet still has 110.000 miles on it, it is obvious that you weren’t going to afford much more.

You can do the work, get a salvaged engine and have reliable wheels for a few years still to come. It also means it produces 260-280 rear-wheel horsepower and more than 300lb-ft of torque.

So what if Hartge just unveiled a video where they showoff what the F30 BMW 328i can do once they’ve tweaked its programming?

Another German tuner, one called Alpina, isn’t very impressed. They’ve also released a video, but this one is rather more striking.

Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo

It’s the Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo version of the F12/F13 BMW 6 Series and it’s not mucking about, it’s headed for a top speed run.

According to the company’s original claims, the seriously modified version of the 650i now gets a upgraded 4.4 liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers.

That powerplant develops 540 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, much closer to what the M6 has to offer than the standard car’s 407 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque.

I suppose that when they said they pumped a lot more go in the package they weren’t lying. The Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo really does what it says on the tin.

Getting to a top speed of 334 km/h (~208 mph) and not taking too long to get there is very impressive. It all gets better when you consider that a de-restricted M6 can manage.

Apart from the serious side, it’s also nice to see one of these no-nonsense videos as they are much more refreshing than the publicity media stuff.

Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo

Right now the only thing left to do is to actually plan and execute the bank robbery that will secure us the money we need to get one of these cars.

After that you can pretty much admit to robbing the bank, it’s not like they will be able to catch you is it?

We can be thankful that in this case the story isn’t so Hollywood. An Egyptian simply wanted a fast BMW 1 Series without being forced to pay retail on the M Coupe.

Apparently, in Egypt, the star player in BMW’s fun loving sedans costs as much as US $150.000. This is why he bought a 120d Coupe and set about the tuning process.

That four cylinder turbocharged diesel was taken out of the equation and replaced with the BMW M3’s naturally aspirated 4.0 liter V8.

BMW 1 Series M V8

Along side the 420 horsepower engine he threw in the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, brakes, suspension kit and alloy wheels and in the end it ended up costing him just 45.000 dollars.

Once you factor in the original car, the added costs he probably came out on top by a little money on purchase costs but might end up winning a lot more on early taxes.

Since the car is more powerful now and it might not have gained any weight it could actually be just as fun and balanced as the original.
