Everytime you drive an SUV nowadays there’s a general consensus in this world that you should be hated somehow. There’s such a social stigma for them you can’t drive one if you’re sensitive to what people think.

This must be how a Lithuanian driver justifies his attempt at tweaking his E70 BMW X5 in order to live with owning it without the typical shame.

Stealth E70 BMW X5

Either that, or he just wanted to get a certain cool air about his car and I’m misjudging him too nicely in how he made up his mind.

He got help from a company called Re-Styling who wrapped the exterior of his Bavarian SUV in the ever more popular vinyl wrap.

The color choice in question is not that much similar to the ever more popular wraps and paint schemes. The matte black effect has been used before, but not like this.

Stealth E70 BMW X5

The idea of calling the car stealthy has a bit of a point since the Lithuanian… tuner didn’t stop with the body panels of the E70 BMW X5.

We’re looking at the alloy wheels, the plastic bumpers, the door handles and just about any place they could find. Factor in the black tinted windows and the desired effect is achieved.

There’s just now way one can see this car at night and, during the day, there’s just now way somebody can see you in it.

Stealth E70 BMW X5

It seems then that the overkill wrapping from Re-Styling may have payed off in my fantasy world and still works decently in the world.

That’s a fact that makes it rather tricky to stand out in such a car. With the Lumma Design option the X5 gets to be little different.

The front end is a little dubious looking but I do appreciate the way just about everything else looks and feels.

In regards to the feeling part, nobody will feel anything new about the way the performance is delivered since Lumma Design have only updated the interior and exterior of the X5.

The usual custom bits have been fitted, there’s a set of new floor mats, newly fitted leather and a few other upgraded trim pieces.

Lumma Design CLR X530

While the aluminium pedals mix well with the new interior paint scheme they feel a tad over sized, perhaps they were designed for people with very big feet.

Moving on back to the exterior design, let’s start with the weak bit. The new grille they’ve fitted on both the radiator and a large part of the front bumper.

For good measure however, Lumma Design’s BMW X530 gets some 22 inch alloy wheels with a matte white finish to match the exterior paint.

Lumma Design CLR X530

In terms of other actual body kit upgrades, there are new side skirts, eyelids for the headlamps and there’s also a new rear bumper and a relatively small spoiler.

Everything seems interesting and perhaps in a different color some would dare say the Lumma Design creation would improve it immensely.

Project Kahn’s prominent figure, Afzal Kahn, has another mildly tuned SUV to show us and it’s one of those special surprises

Nothing outrageous, there’s no surprising million horsepower under the bonnet and the seats don’t even have ejector buttons.

Project Kahn BMW X5 xDrive30d

The surprise with Project Kahn’s work is that this lightly tuned SUV is not a Land Rover made model. The British tuner actually took on a German.

It’s the Bavarian built BMW X5, particularly the xDrive30d version. You wouldn’t really be able to tell what model is on display but you certainly know what car we’re talking about.

Getting back to the actual tuning, obviously the big fat 22 inch RSL alloy wheels painted in a Silver Palladium finish.

Project Kahn BMW X5 xDrive30d

The color of the wheels is only relevant if you’re to consider the way it makes the new stealthy black paint stand out from the crowd.

An eagle eyed enthusiast will notice that the BMW X5 xDrive 30d by Project Kahn also comes with an unusual brake caliper color for the Bavarians.

That’ll be a Liquid Red shade that’s usually reserved to some of the most agitated of sports cars. All of these details together should make for quite the performance package right?

Wrong, beyond the subtly refreshed exterior of the Kahn BMW X5 xDrive30d, we find nothing more than the standard performance drivetrain.

Project Kahn BMW X5 xDrive30d

The interior of the X5 however, receives considerably more upgrades. Quilted perforated leather, carbon fiber inserts and new glove box

That’s quite the makeover in details but what is a rather questionable decision is the one that Kahn took when they swapped out the instrument panel.

Spin the clock back a few years and you’ll remember it’s not the same story. The world would for the first time see the BMW X5, E53.

The instant appeal was easily noticeable, this is where you’d need to stand out by appealing to a tuning specialist like AC Schnitzer.

They’d provide quite the upgrade to the performance of the 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine, refine the exterior, interior and even the suspension.

The engine’s power goes up from 218 to 253 horsepower and the torque figure jumps from 500 Nm to 550. Back then the petrol power was deemed as having enough.

AC Schnitzer BMW X5 E53

What wasn’t enough was the suspension. BMW had made the first SUV that felt like driving a car but offered the high riding position.

With standard trim however, the car was relatively rigid. AC Schnitzer had managed to keep the driving feel but make for decent comfort as well.

Inside, the changes of the AC Schnitzer BMW X5 E53 were quite modest but featured the most interesting material of the time, carbon fiber.

AC Schnitzer BMW X5 E53

Naturally, there was a choice of wheels available and they were all enormous. In order to compensate for the lack of flexibility, the tires had been upgraded to Michelin ones.

It’s a nice ride down memory lane, hopefully AC Schnitzer enthusiasts remember where they got their first individual X5 kits.

It’s an offering introduced about a couple of years ago just as the Bavarians were launching the E70 version of the BMW X5 SAV.

BMW X5 Falcon by AC Schnitzer

Since then, few things have changed about it. The body kit remained mostly the same, the engine output varies and more of the engines can now be tuned.

The Aachen based tuner fitted new bumpers, skirts and wheel arch extensions to create a relatively not obvious widebody kit.

They’ve then continued to produce a hood which has vents in it and may include chromed kidney grilles should you opt for it.

BMW X5 Falcon by AC Schnitzer

Overall, the look of the Falcon AC Schnitzer BMW X5 is a pretty impressive looking machine, which kind of lets itself down when you find out what engine mods are available.

Only the diesel powerplants receive a re-tweak. All the variations ever available in standard trim of the 3.0 liter straight six diesel can be given a bit of an extra boost.

The two M57 engines can go from 235 to 272 horsepower or from 285 to 313. Torque figures notice a similar bump.

BMW X5 Falcon by AC Schnitzer

With the more modern N57 powerplants performance is updated from 245 to 286 horsepower or from 306 to 360 hp.

The latter figure is pretty close to what BMW is giving you in the very expensive M Performance diesels so it might actually be worth a second look at.

Before BMW created the X5 M, the only real chance at going fast in a really big vehicle was to tune up the X5 SAV. With the introduction of the M developed model it seems different.

The BMW X5 M is impressive on so many levels it seems pointless to keep tuning the lesser brother but that’s not how G-Power feels.

BMW X5 by G-Power

The German tuner still thinks there’s a case for its Typhoon package for the BMW X5 so let’s grab a second look and see if it’s still worth it.

Having started out with the top end xDrive48i the tuner took the 4.8 liter V8 engine all the way up to 528 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

With this engine the G-Power X5 can go from 0 to 62 in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of around 170 mph.

BMW X5 by G-Power

A new body kit is formed of flared wheel arches, new bumpers, a new hood and a discrete rear spoiler. The looks are more aggressive but still relatively bearable.

What is important about the looks is the fitting of new multispoke 23 inch alloy wheels and some very low profile tires.

That’s where handling is compromised but this is where things start to count once again. The G-Power BMW X5 is still using standard suspension so it’s not as stiff as the X5 M.

BMW X5 by G-Power

There’s also the issue of pricing, the G-Power BMW X5 costs quite the chunk of change less since they’re only expensive mod is the supercharger kit.

G-Power wouldn’t be too obvious about the costs of the entire package but they’re adamant it’s less than the X5 M costs more than the normal SAV.
