In recent years, most car makers, BMW included, started to downsize their engines, as new technologies allow for more power from a smaller block.

One side effect of this is the slightly mellower sound of the engine.

With the new generation of 3 and 4 Series, BMW decided to make sure the sound is still aggressive enough by enhancing it with through the speaker system. Some of the more purist fans of BMW, however, thought this was an insult, and might even got as far as to argue that the car maker has ruined the legacy with the new BMW M4.
