A German tuner called Versus Performance went on and did a bunch of tuning thingamajigs to one of the most interesting BMW models available right now.

F20 BMW M135i by Versus Performance

The F20 BMW M135i was tweaked by these ambitious Germans and they tweaked quite a lot of aspects about it. The engine, the suspension, the wheels and tires all got upgrades.

For the engine an ECU remap and the fitting of a Bastuck exhaust system means you no longer get 320/332 but 390 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque.

That force fed 3.0 liter straight six cylinder engine is really getting worked up and getting its power down requires more than putting your foot down.

F20 BMW M135i by Versus Performance

The suspension the car rides on is a KW Clubsport setup and it’s hooked up to 18 inch ATS Motorsport alloys wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

All of these changes are bound to make a really big difference which is why Sport Auto’s Christian Gebhardt took it for a proper test.

Forget the back road calm driving and chit-chat about the interior trim quality and value for money factor. The whole thing went down at the Hockenheim track.

As you can see, there was no messing about. He managed to get round the track in 1:13.5, which is 2.2 second quicker than the standard M135i.

The new time is also comparable to what the E46 BMW M3 CSL managed. Now that is seriously impressive a figure.

It all started with their handsome interpretation of the F10 M5, carried on with the F30 3 Series and now went down to the smallest member of the family.

F20 BMW 1 Series by 3D Design

The F20 BMW 1 Series got remade by 3D Design in the company’s usual presence, with all the bells whistles and some decent partners.

Considering they offer something they call a full line of exterior accessories, it’s obvious you’re not getting the standard body kit.

The aerodynamics are completely worked over and yet are just the tip of the iceberg. Obviously, the alloy wheels are coming in as the next more striking thing.

F20 BMW 1 Series by 3D Design

Unusually, they’re not telling us what dimensions are used on it. Going on with the zoom, you can appreciate the new exhaust systems on offer as well as the interior components.

That exhaust system is pretty interesting in itself, mostly for the new sound it generates out of the relatively small engines in the 1 Series.

It’s also crucial for the rather exposed back end. That’s perhaps the first controversial bit of tuning we’re yet to see from 3D Design.

Allegedly, the exhaust system was developed alongside a company called Arqray. That sounds… almost familiar somehow.

F20 BMW 1 Series by 3D Design

Either way, the interior of the 3D Design tuning F20 BMW 1 Series is where the highlights are to be appreciated in their entirety.

There aren’t any comments there and nor are there any on the company’s decision to soon offer some mods for the chassis.

His requests stopped at just some of the goodies and surprisingly, they’re not the ones most easily predictable of the list.

This F20 BMW 1 Series receives a Hartge sports suspension setup, the 19 inch alloy wheels Hartge calls the Ultima set.

On top of these changes (and the M Sport package), the 1 Series receives dual round tail pipes and brand new custom made floor mats.

F20 BMW 1 Series by Hartge

The Black Sapphire finish chosen by the owner goes well with anything so fitting those alloys wheels and that exhaust setup couldn’t go wrong.

This F20 here was ordered with an automatic gearbox and the 116d’s powerplant. Hartge does offer an ecu remap for this particular engine but the owner didn’t specify it.

Not sure if it’s a matter of cost, or future plans, but it seems a little weird to go for the options that make your car somewhat more uncomfortable and not go for the added performance.

F20 BMW 1 Series by Hartge

Who knows, maybe he wants the looks of the Hartge version of the F20 BMW 1 Series but isn’t ready or interested in messing around with its fuel economy capabilities.

More details on the complete kit Hartge has in store for the F20 BMW 1 Series can be found here.

Truth be told, the list of BMW 5 Series tuning products was getting rather long. Why not have a change of pace by taking as second look at the F20 BMW 1 Series?

German tuner Hartge is willing to help us on that as they currently have on of the finest kits on offer for the smallest BMW out there.

Hartge BMW 1 Series

It’s a no nonsense approach that gives the F20 BMW 1 Series some minor aesthetic tweaks, some changes inside and some extra grunt under the bonnet.

With the exterior being a first concern, the F20 BMW 1 Series features no changes to the body kit. You can however order some Hartge badges to replace those that come on the car from Bavaria.

Basically the exterior tuning kit is limited to a new chromed exhaust tip and a set of 19 inch alloys built in-house by Hartge. They’re available in silver or smoked silver colors.

Hartge BMW 1 Series

Inside the Hartge F20 we find the same sort of minimalist approach. You can get new badges, aluminium pedals and custom velour carpets and that’s about it.

Under the bonnet things are a little more interesting but only the diesel engines get an ECU remap. Happily though, all of them get it and each gets a bit more power.

With these mods the 116d now produces 140 hp and 229 lb-ft, the 118d gets 172 hp and 280 lb-ft and finally the upgraded 120d features 215 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Hartge BMW 1 Series

Fuel consumption figures aren’t available but the German tuner promises that most drivers won’t notice the difference since this is a mild software update.
